Botox

Botox is a very simple cosmetic treatment of lines and wrinkles formed between your eyebrows, on your forehead or around the eyes (crow’s feet).

How does it work?

When botulinum toxin is injected  in the muscle it blocks the motor nerve endings that give the muscle the ‘’message’’ to move. This results in failure of the muscle to contract giving a relaxed and young look of the face.

Is it Safe?

Botox has been used since the ‘80s to treat medical conditions such as strabismus, blepharopasm, cervical dystonia. In 2002 it was approved by the FDA for cosmetic treatments and since then millions of people have been treated with no major adverse reactions. Recently botox has been approved to treat migranes and is being used to treat palmal and axilary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Is it safe for me?

Should not be used during pregnancy, with people who have a neurologic disease or take certain medication.

What are the side effects?

There are no permanent side effects since the treatment lasts up to 6 months. Bruising or erythema at the site of injection are the most common side effects. Dropping of the eye occurs very rarely and lasts up to two weeks.
